Which departure actually goes to Oak Alley
This is the single most important thing to know before booking, and it is buried in the small print of the listing. The 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. departures visit Oak Alley. The 1 p.m. departure goes to Destrehan Plantation instead.
Both are real plantations and both are included in the same price, but they are not the same place, and Destrehan is not what you came for if you have read this far. Choose a morning slot at checkout and the question disappears.
What two hours at the plantation buys you
You arrive with a timed slot on the guided Big House tour, which runs about thirty-five minutes with a guide in period dress. That leaves roughly eighty minutes of your own.
Eighty minutes covers the alley, one exhibit and a walk to the gift shop. It does not cover all five exhibits: the Slavery at Oak Alley exhibit alone is billed at an hour by the Foundation. Travellers who want the exhibits finished as well as the house take one of the three-hour trips instead.
Ninety minutes on the Manchac Swamp
The boat is a covered pontoon rather than an airboat. It is slower, it is shaded, and it carries no minimum height and no restriction on pregnancy, back problems or heart conditions. For a mixed-age group that difference decides the booking.
Alligators are the draw and the guides work at bringing wildlife close, but nothing is guaranteed — they are less active in winter. Birds, turtles and the cypress itself are the reliable part.
Checking in at the Lighthouse, not at your hotel
This trip does not collect you. It departs from the Gray Line Lighthouse ticket office at 400 Toulouse Street, at the Mississippi end of the French Quarter by the Steamboat Natchez dock, one block from Jackson Square. Arrive fifteen minutes before boarding to check in.
If you are staying in or near the Quarter that is a short walk and it saves you an early pick-up window. If you are staying uptown or on the Westbank, a trip with hotel collection is the easier morning — the half-day tours all include it.

Who this suits, and who should book something else
It suits you if
Anyone who wants the plantation and the wetlands in one day without an early alarm, travelling with mixed ages or fitness, and staying within walking distance of Jackson Square.
Choose something else if
Anyone who needs collecting from a hotel outside the Quarter, or who wants more than two hours on the grounds. In that case go to the half-day tours instead — the small-group half-days with hotel pick-up and three hours on site.
Know before you go
- Photography is not allowed inside the house. Shoot the upper balcony instead — it is the long view down the alley.
- The house tour is stairs. The Foundation offers an iPad tour of the upper floor for anyone who cannot climb them.
- No hotel pick-up on this trip. Allow time to reach 400 Toulouse Street and check in fifteen minutes early.
- Lunch is not included and nothing is provided on board. There is a restaurant a block from the house; the free time covers it.
- The group runs up to twenty-eight. Book the 9 a.m. departure if you want the alley before the coaches build up.
- Gratuities and hotel transfers are excluded. Budget for both, or take a trip that includes the transfer.
